Therapy is an excellent opportunity to GROW in specific mental & emotional areas, or to HEAL from prior wounds that impact your capacity to live life to the fullest. A counselor can help you manage any difficulties you are experiencing at any stage of life. Oftentimes people think that they need to have a mental health diagnosis in order to go to counseling. This is not true. We do not only go to doctors when we have a medical problem. We have annual health check ups! Just as doctors have received training to help people be the healthiest version of themselves, therapists have received specific training in listening beneath the words people say to help them identify areas of growth and healing. Everyone has areas in which they can grow, and a counselor can help you develop personal goals for growth.
While many therapists are able to help you with a variety of topics and goals, it may be important that you find a therapist who is trained in the specific area of growth or healing you are interested in working on. For instance, if you want to reduce the impact depression has on your life, you want to meet with someone who has training in treating depression as opposed to someone who has training in treating sexual addiction.
It also takes time to find a therapist who is the right fit for you. You might find that the first therapist you go to just isn’t a great match. Keep trying different therapists until you find one that works for you.
Whether in person or online, many people have found therapy to be tremendously helpful in their journey of emotional and mental wellness.
